The cross was made by the artists, Aleksandr Baier and Grigori Saltup. Previously this sort of ritual crosses were erected to crossroads and other holy sites or due to a significant, sometimes tragic, event. At the cemetery rests a number of members from families with runo singers, e.g. the Jamanen family. The place can be seen in the photographs by I. K. Inha.
The Old Cemetery of Kalevala
After the Second World War the grave markers were removed from the cemetery, and it was turned into a place for festivities such as traditional celebrations and performances. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the area was transformed into a Sacred Grove and a 4,5 meter high Orthodox cross was placed on the site.
